About Peter Atkins

Peter was born in Launceston, Tasmania. His father was the Master of Foxhounds and his mother was an amateur jockey, Grand Prix show jumper, and was long-listed for the 1984 Olympics in eventing. Throughout his childhood, Peter was active in pony club, show jumping, fox hunting and eventing, and he began competing at the age of six. At age 16, Peter left Tasmania and joined the Australian Army, for which he competed in uniform for 12 years.

In the mid ‘90’s, Peter relocated to the United States where he began his career as a successful competitor, trainer, and coach.

In the spring of 2010, he completed his first Four-star event, the Rolex Three-Day in Kentucky. In October, Peter and HJ Hampton, known to his legion of fans as “Henny,” represented Australia in the World Equestrian Games. At the “WEG,” Peter and Henny made an astonishing leap from 71st after dressage to place 24th in the world; they eventually finished as the second ranked pair on the Australian team. Peter’s goal is to represent and compete for Australia again in the 2012 Olympic Games.

When he is not competing and training, Peter is a popular clinician among all levels of riders, inspiring confidence in even the most timid rider. Additionally, Peter maintains a reputation of being exceptional with problem horses, always approaching them with kindness and a soft touch. Peter lives with his wife, Amy, and their son Owen in Florida and Vermont.
